Primary Purpose:
Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
Assist in planning, coordinating, and supervising all components of the athletic training program for student athletes. Work under the direction of the team physician to prevent, recognize, assess, manage, treat, and recondition athletic injuries and illnesses.
Qualifications: Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree from accredited university Valid Texas teaching certificate in Health Science 6-12 Valid license from Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers Valid license from Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Current adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) Instructor certification Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned ESL Certification/Endorsement (preferred)
Initial Health Science: To obtain a Health Science certificate you must meet the following requirements:
Hold an associate or more advanced degree from an institution of higher learning accredited or approved by an accrediting agency recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB). Hold current licensure, certification, or registration by a nationally recognized accrediting agency as a health professions practitioner. Two years of full-time wage-earning work experience as a health professions practitioner in a field that is nationally recognized by an accrediting agency. The required work experience must be approved by a certification officer of an approved educator preparation program. (Statement of Qualifications form [PDF, 305.40 KB]) Eligible military experience may be used in lieu of civilian licensure and wage-earning experience; your educator preparation program will review for eligibility. Complete an approved Texas Educator Preparation Program Pass current certification exams. Contact your program for exam approval. Athletic Training: To obtain a Athletic Training certificate you must meet the following requirements:

Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of core academic subject assigned Knowledge of curriculum and instruction Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to provide injury prevention and rehabilitation services. Ability to provide emergency care. Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes and assistants. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Knowledge of therapeutic modalities and ability to apply appropriate treatment to treat student athletic injuries. Knowledge of University Interscholastic League (UIL) rules.
Experience: 1 year student teaching or approved internship 2 more years of experience as an athletic trainer (preferred)

Instructional Strategies: Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual student differences. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities. Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP). Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements. Plan and assign work to instructional aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion.
Student Growth and Development: Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal. Be a position role model for students; support the mission of the school district.
Classroom Management and Organization: Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
Communication: Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
Professional Growth and Development: Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills. Comply with state, district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Illness/Injury Prevention and Treatment: Plan and implement a comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention program for student athletes. Attend practice sessions and athletic contests as assigned by the Athletic Director. Establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, medical and paramedical personnel, coaches, and other staff. Provide physical conditioning training to student athletes. Fit injured athletes with specialized equipment and oversee its use. Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices. Prepare athletes for games and practices by conducting evaluations and using tape, wraps, splints, braces, and other protective devices as needed. Respond to emergencies and make quick, independent judgments about how to deal with injuries. Identify acute injuries and provide first-aid triage, including assessing injuries and deciding whether an athlete should seek further medical attention and should discontinue participation in the athletic event. Establish specific procedures to be carried out by a coach or student trainer in the event of a medical emergency. Detect and resolve environmental risks to athletes. Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.
Rehabilitation/Reconditioning: Plan and put in place a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by student athletes. Determine therapeutic goals and objectives for individual athletes. Apply therapeutic modalities and instruct athletes on proper use of exercise equipment. Evaluate and record rehabilitation progress of athletes. Develop criteria for progression and return to practice and competition. Follow professional, ethical, and legal parameters regarding use of drugs and therapeutic agents for treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
Administration: Coordinate scheduling of athletic physical examinations and screening. Select, train, and supervise student assistants. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents including medical, accident, and treatment records as required. Maintain an inventory of training supplies and equipment. Requisition additional supplies as needed. Keep informed of and ensure compliance with all UIL rules. Assist in development and coordination of evaluation of the coaching program and make changes based on findings. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. Must be present regularly in person.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s) (if applicable) and student assistants.
